Civita
Civita
Brian was awarded a fellowship in Italy to shoot an extended portrait of Civita di Bagnoregio over two visits in the fall of 2016 and spring of 2017. Civita is an ancient crumbling hill town in northern Lazio that was founded by the Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago. Reachable only by a foot bridge, it sits on a pinnacle of eroding volcanic soil (tufa) in a fairytale-like setting. Civita has come to be known as “il paese che muore” or “the dying city” as earthquakes and repeated landslides threaten its fragile existence. There is now an international effort to save Civita in the hope it will become designated as a World Heritage Site.
